WATERVILLE, Maine-Juniors Adam Scalesse and Ben Wolhaupter each took home Division III New England titles as the Coast Guard men's track and field team placed fifth overall among 26 scoring teams on the day at the Division III New England Regional Meet hosted by Colby College. The Bears scored 46 points to finish just behind a trio of NESCAC schools and conference foe MIT while Bates won the overall championship with 144 points, narrowly edging out the Engineers.
Scalesse had himself quite a day as he won his title in the 110 meter hurdles, crossing the line in 14.33 seconds. He also went on to claim a fourth place finish in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles, running a season-best time of 53.88 seconds, and was on the sixth place 4x400 meter relay team that garnered All-New England Accolades.
Wolhaupter won the pole vault event which wasn't decided until a jump off to break a tie to determine the champion. The jump off was highly competitive and Wolhaupter came away with the victory after clearing 15 feet, five inches.
Senior Will Baker threw a season-best 156 feet, seven inches in the discus event, which was good enough to place third and collect All-New England accolades.
The Bears also placed a pair of relay teams in the top eight to earn All-New England recognition. The 4x800 meter team of junior Jordan Lee, freshman Ben Chapman, and sophomores Joe Kelly and James Martin finished sixth in a time of 7:53.22. The previously mentioned 4x400 meter team, consisting of Scalesse, sophomore James Dawkins, freshman Fred Higgins, and sophomore Ben Hannon finished in a time of 3:21.95, good enough for sixth place.
Next up for Coast Guard will be a trip to Stonehill College next weekend for the All Division New England Regional Meet on May 10th and 11th.
