Roland Hall

Roland Hall serves as the home of six of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's 21 varsity sports teams, as well as the headquarters of the Academy's Athletics Department. The building takes its name from ADM Edwin J. Roland '29, who served as Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard from 1962 to 1969. In his cadet days, Roland was captain of the CGA football team and a standout member of the basketball and baseball teams. Later on, in addition to his duties on cutters, Roland captained the 1931 Coast Guard football team which won that year's President's Cup competition against the Army, Marine Corps, and Navy teams.

The building is a five-level structure sitting at the southern end of campus; the floors are commonly referred to as "decks." 5th Deck houses Dr. Hallie E. Gregory Field House, the Academy's multi-purpose indoor track facility; 4th Deck is home to the Athletics Department offices; 3rd deck features Alumni Gymnasium, Roland Pool, and a patio balcony overlooking the Academy's obstacle course and part of the waterfront; 2nd Deck has cadet-athlete locker rooms, the equipment room, and the upper level of the Emlen Tunnell Strength & Conditioning Center; and 1st Deck is comprised of the lower level of Emlen Tunnell.

Alumni Gymnasium is home to the CGA women's volleyball team and men's and women's basketball programs. The gym features three basketball courts on a well-kept hardwood surface, retractable bleachers, and a Daktronics scoreboard and videoboard system. Each court has it's own set of retractable, ceiling-suspended basketball hoops, with center court acting as the primary playing surface. Roland Pool, situated right next to Alumni Gym, is six lanes wide and 25 yards long while featuring 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards. Outside of hosting competitions and practices for the Academy's swim & dive teams, the facility is also used to carry out physical education courses and military training exercises for the Corps of Cadets.

The Roland Courts are a pair of hard-surface tennis courts used as the primary outdoor venue of the CGA tennis team. Both courts contain three playing surfaces, with the primary court located behind the connecting tunnel between Roland and Billard Hall; the other surface is located just southeast to the obstacle course. The primary court is also used for physical education courses, while both are often utilized by the Corps of Cadets for recreational pickleball sessions.
