Nelson W. Nitchman Field

Nelson W. Nitchman Field comprises the entirety of the Academy's lower field area, which features a soccer pitch, outdoor track, and baseball and softball fields. The area's waterfront is the site of the Coast Guard Academy Rowing Center and Jacobs Rock Sailing Center.

The soccer pitch, which is artificial turf, is surrounded by the track, which the track & field team utilizes during their outdoor season. Both the baseball and softball field are natural grass, with the baseball field hosting dimensions of 327-360-315 and the softball field being 190-200-190. Between the track and baseball field is a large grass area, which the track & field team uses for throwing event.

The area is named for Nelson W. Nitchman, who worked at the Academy from 1942 to 1989 as an instructor and basbeall coach. Nitchman was the Assistant Physical Education Director and the Director of Intramurals for most of his time in New London, as well as head coach of the football, basketball, and baseball teams at different points of his tenure.
