Scalesse Named NEWMAC Athlete of the Year; Bears Place 3rd

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Junior All-American Adam Scalesse was named the NEWMAC Track Athlete of the Year as he set a meet, school and facility record as he won the 110 hurdles and he was second in the 400 hurdles as Coast Guard placed third in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships at Springfield College.

Scalesse won the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.16 and had a time of 54.18 in the 400 hurdles to earn All-conference honors as the top two in each event are named to the All-conference team.

The Bears had two more champions crowned as Ben Wolhaupter won the pole vault (15 feet, one inch) and Will Baker won the discus with a toss of 147 feet, two inches. Baker placed second in the discus last season. He also placed fifth this season in the shot put with a personal best throw of 41 feet, seven inches.

Nick Foster was third in the 10,000 meters with a time of 33:00.65 to qualify for the Division III New England Championships while Stephen Horvath was third in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time personal best time of 9:42.94 and Thomas Bondurant placed third in the hammer with a personal best throw of 158 feet, seven inches.

The Bears 4x100 relay of Ben Hannon, Clay Kosack, Kelcey Smith and James Dawkins placed third with an impressive time of 43.44.

Hannon also placed fourth in the 400 meters (50.42) and set a personal best time of 22.62 to place fifth in the 200 meters. Frederick Higgins was fifth in the 400 meters with a personal best time of 50.78.

MIT won with 290 points, WPI placed second with 215 points while the Bears, who placed fifth last year finished with 114 points for the third place finish.
