NEW LONDON, Conn.-The Coast Guard men's track and field team placed second out of six teams at the Camel Invitational hosted by Connecticut College on Saturday.
In the track portion of the meet, Coast Guard had 18 runners (14 different) record or assist in recording points.
Sophomores Ben Hannon (51.99) and James Dawkins (53.03), and freshman Frederick Higgins (53.22) led the pack in a 1-2-3 finish in the 400 meter.
Junior Jordan Lee (4:11.08) took home the second of two Coast Guard second place finishes in the 1500 meter.
Sophomore Joey O'Connell (16:15.11) recorded a third place finish in the 5000 meter.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Hannon, sophomore Kelcey Smith, Higgins, and Dawkins claimed a victory in a time of 3:33.98.
On the field side, the Bears were exceptionally strong as well, with 15 runners (12 different) scoring in the meet.
Junior Ben Wolhaupter won the pole vault with a height of 4.50 meters, besting teammate, freshman Matt Navetta, and the rest of the field by a wide margin of 0.80 meters (2 feet, 7.5 inches).
Junior Adam Scalese recorded a jump of 1.83 meters, good for second in the high jump. In the horizontal counterpart of the jumping segment, classmate Omar Duke-Tinson placed second with a distance of 5.99 meters.
The Bears had three scorers in the discus with senior Will Baker (42.04 meters) leading that group with a second place toss. Baker (43.76 meters) also came second in the hammer throw, as, once again, three Coast Guard student-athletes recorded points in the event.
Coast Guard returns to action on Saturday, March 30th with their only home meet of the season, as they host the CGA Spring Invite.
