SHREWSBURY, Mass. --
CGA men's rowing finally got back on the racecourse after a three-week break and the weather was less than cooperative with 15+ MPH head winds and rain, but thanks to the judge referees working Lake Quinsigimond we were able to get in the full slate of races.Â
The first race of the day included the first varsity boats from CGA, WPI, BC, and Connecticut College racing for the McGee/McCarthy Cup. CGA got away from the line fast and clean and by the 1500-meter mark had built up a 5 or 6 seat lead, but we could not hold off a charging WPI crew that overtook us and won the race by .9 seconds. CGA was second well ahead of Boston College and Conn College.
The second race of the day had the largest field with U Mass (Amherst) joining in with CGA, WPI, BC and Conn. For some reason, our 2V guys like the howling headwinds and after a controlled start they were able to establish their rhythm, pulled ahead, and were able to hold off the field for the win 4.4 seconds ahead of the second place WPI crew and gain four shirts.
Our 3V had its first opportunity to race on a fully buoyed racecourse with stakeboats at the start (a first for the coxswain and half the boat). That was an opportunity that will pay dividends next week when we return to Worcester to race in the New England Championships. We could not match the speed of WPIs two boats, but it was a solid row and a building block.Â
We had to drop from a 4V eight to a four because several rowers were missing from the roster due to sickness. Strong winds, a smaller boat, and novice rowers are not the best of combinations, but the four raced with heart and held with WPI for over half the race before losing contact.
It is hard to believe it, but up next is the New England Championships on Saturday 3 May 2025. We will be launching out of Regatta Point Park in Worcester, and we hope to see parents, alumni, and friends at the park!
