CGA Men’s rowing team drops races to #2 Tufts and #3 Trinity

MEDFORD, Mass. --

This weekend the team traveled to Medford, MA to race. There was the threat of rain, but it held off until the racing was almost completed. We just had to load up for the trip home in the rain. The cool temperatures did not affect the rowers too much because of the tight turnaround times between the two races. The hero of the day was 2/c Kimber Moring who coxed four races in three hours, literally walking down the dock from the boat she landed to a boat waiting for her to launch.

The first set of races pitted each of our four eights against the #2 nationally ranked crews from Tufts University. The 1V put up a valiant fight and closed on Tufts in the sprint but finished 3.6 seconds behind the Jumbos. In the second varsity race our 2V was down by a little open water coming out of the "S" turn when the two seat of the Tufts eight "caught a crab" and was ejected from their boat. CGA completed the race while the Tufts boat waited for their teammate to be recovered.

In our last two races of the morning the 3V waited on the dock for the 1V to return and for Kimber to walk down the length of the dock to get in and get going. I was impressed by the improvements that the 3V and the 4V have made, but we were not a match for the depth of the Tufts program. They are both very young, very inexperienced boats who were able to take another step forward. Each race shows improvement and Tufts is likely the deepest programs in D3.

Less than 90 minutes later our boats were back to the line to race #3 ranked Trinity. For all boats it was the second race of the day as Trinity had raced Tufts before us. The 1V race was for the Emerson Cub, the oldest cup race CGA Rowing has. In each case our boats raced aggressively, but we could not match Trinity's speed. Trinity retains the Emerson Cup.

A benefit of double racing at Tufts is it helps prepare us for the championship season where we will have to race twice in the same day.

Up next is a matchup with Colby College before we have a weekend off and then get into the championship season. It is hard to believe that the New England Championships are only four weeks away.
