SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-The Coast Guard men's track and field team was paced by juniors Adam Scalesse and Jordan Lee, each of whom won two events for the Bears as they placed second at the three-team Springfield College Invitational.
The team victory on the day was WPI with 186.50 points ahead of Coast Guard's 117.50, which was good enough to edge Springfield's 102.
Scalesse continued his dominance in the hurdle events with times of 14.29 and 54.78 in the 110 and 400 hurdles, respectively. Meanwhile, Lee was busy pulling away from the field in the 800 and 1500 meter races with strong times of 1:59.17 and 4:05.88.
In addition to those victories, the Bears also recorded three other event wins on the afternoon. Sophomore Stephen Horvath won the 3000 steeplechase (9:00.00) while junior Ben Wolhaupter won the pole vault with a jump of 14 feet, 1 ¼ inches. Picking up the final win of the day was senior Will Baked, who paced the discus field with a throw of 149 feet, 1 inch.
Sophomore Ben Hannon was able to place second in a pair of events (200, 400 dash) with times of 22.98 and 51.59, respectively. Sophomore Joel MacArthur also recorded a pair of top three finishes with a second place finish in the javelin (160 feet, 6 inches) and a third place result in the discus (121 feet, 8 inches).
In addition, the Bears had two more second place finishes. One by sophomore Nicholas Foster in the 5000 run (15:48.95) and the other by the 4x400 relay team with a time of 3:26.98.
Also reaching the medal table were sophomores James Dawkins (100 meter; 11.22), Joey O'Connell (5000 meter; 15:58.60), and Omar Duke-Tinson (Long Jump; 10 feet, 5 ¼ inches), and freshman Matt Navetta (Pole Vault; 12 feet, 7 ½ inches).
The Bears return to action on Saturday, April 20th when they compete in the Slifen Invitational, hosted by Connecticut College.
