NEW LONDON, Conn.-Junior Adam Scalesse posted a Division III-national best time of 14.43 in the 110 hurdles in helping to lead the Coast Guard men's track and field team to a second place finish out of the 11 teams competing at the 2013 Coast Guard Invitational. The Bears recorded 106 points on the day, being bested by only WPI's 127.
For the day, Coast Guard recorded four first place finishes headlined by Scalesse. In addition to his performance in the 110 hurdles, Scalesse also posted a top-five national time of 54.11 in the 400 hurdles.
Sophomore Stephen Horvath also picked up a victory in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 10:09.43.
The fourth, and final, victory of the day was won on the strength of senior Will Baker's arm, as he threw a meet-best 153 feet 06 inches in the discus.
Beyond the victories, the Bears also picked up three finishes good for second place. First, in the men's 400, sophomore Ben Hannon posted a time of 50.37, less than half a second off the pace.
In the 800 junior Jordan Lee recorded a time of 1:56.57, 0.29 seconds behind the winner.
Finally, in the 4x400 relay, the Coast Guard "A" squad ran a time of 3:23.94.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, April 6th at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.
