WORCESTER, Mass. - Another exciting day at the NEWMAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships featured multiple broken records, three event wins, and four podium placements for Coast Guard. The Bears remain second in the field of seven.
Team captain
Sean Lyman (Pennsburg, Pa.) started things with at bang by becoming back-to-back champion in the 400-yard individual medley for his second win of the 2025 championships. Lyman's time of 3:50.63 broke the NEWMAC open record, the NEWMAC Championship meet record (which he had set earlier that morning during trials), the Coast Guard Academy record, and was an NCAA B-cut time.
The Bears' second win of the day, and second multi-event winner of the meet, came later on in the form of
Noah Reice (Wilmigton, Del.), who swam 47.29 in the 100-yard butterfly. Much like his senior, Riece's time was an open record, meet record, Academy record, and B-cut time, but he also had the distinction of breaking the facility record at WPI's Sports & Rec Center. Also i the 100 fly was
Charles Gaines (Macon, Ga.), who placed tenth at 50.54.
Making it three winners for Coast Guard was team captain
Colin Twiss (Mahwah, N.J.), who won the 200-yard freestyle to become a three-time champion in the event while setting another school record and achieving a B-cut time. Teammate
Luke Giguere (Belchertown, Mass.) was eighth in the same event, clocking in at 1:41.68.
Coast Guard had three top-ten finishers int he 100-yard breaststroke:
John Kaleta (Morrow, Ohio) was the top placer in fourth with his 55.57;
Blaise Minckler (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) was sixth at 56.19; and
Matthew Carper (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was ninth at 57.41.
Zachary McGowen (Springfield, Va.) took second in the 100-yard backstroke after recording a 50.82. McGowen etched himself into another history later that night during time trials. In Coast Guard's 400-yard medley trial, McGowen led off with the backstroke and broke another Academy record with his first leg time of 50.00.
Michael Carden (Kennesaw, Ga.) also competed in the 100-yard backstroke final, placing seventh at 51.88.
In diving,
Colbrin Blanchette (Edwardsville, Ill.) made an appearance in the 1-meter championship and placed tenth with a score of 290.45.
Finally, the day's lone relay event saw the team of Carden, Carper, Gaines, and
Kacper Buniowski (Birdgewater, N.J.) place fifth in the 200-yard medley relay with their time of 1:32.57.
