Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Clay Sowell's three-run homer highlighted a six run seventh inning leading Tufts to a 15-5 win over Coast Guard in a non-conference game played at Mitchell College.
It was the season opener for Tufts while Coast Guard drops to 4-3 on the season. Coast Guard head coach Brian Casey, a Tufts alum, faced off against his brother Brendan, the associate head coach at Tufts.
Coast Guard led 4-3 after five innings as the Bears got a two-run double by Grayson Irwin in the fourth to tie the game 2-2 and retied the game 3-3 on an RBI ground out by Wyatt Duthu in the fifth and the Bears took the lead 4-3 on an unearned run in the fifth.
The Jumbos would take the lead for good with three in the sixth without a base hit as they took advantage of four walks and a pair of hit batters to take a 6-4 lead. The Bears cut the deficit to 6-5 on an RBI double by John Tacchini in the sixth before the Jumbos big sixth inning put the game away.
Brock Schisler had his first career hit, a pinch hit ground rule double in the ninth. Tacchini, Irwin and Schisler all doubled for the Bears while Jack Steel tripled.
Connor Kinney got the win in relief as he allowed one run on one hit over two innings.
John Thigpen allowed just three runs and five hits over the first five innings while walking three and striking out five. Connor Glynn (0-1) took the loss as he was touched for three runs in the sixth.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday when they host Mass. Maritime at 3:30.
