NEWBURY, Mass. –
On a beautiful day for baseball, Coast Guard got a much needed sweep with two victories over Emerson College. The wins improve the Bears to 9-13 (3-6 NEWMAC). Emerson in turn, falls to 4-17 (1-8 NEWMAC). Emerson will travel to Wheaton College on Tuesday April 14th at 3:30 PM.
In game one, the CGA offense went nuclear. In a seven inning mercy win, the Bears scored 23 runs, the most in the program since a 25-3 win over Babson in 2012.
In the offensive barrage,
Carson Cho (Haymarket, VA) was the star. The junior; who had been scuffling as of late, went off with a homer in a 4-5 performance while also walking twice, scoring four runs and driving in five. Freshman outfielder
Peter Karloustos (Ridgefield, CT) touched the plate three times and drove in two in the first three hit performance of his career. Joining Cho and Karloustos in the multiple hit club were
Nate Stafford (Jupiter, FL) and
Yadisson Karbalaieasghar (Coral Springs, FL) with two each.
Kael Godshalk (Bangor, PA) had a patient game at the dish, walking twice and getting hit once while also doubling. Godshalk, known for his ability to be hit by pitch, was one of six HBPs in game one.
Not to be overshadowed by the offense in game one was the stellar pitching duo of
Vito Giordano (Scarsdale, NY) and
John DiMarsico (Severna Park, MD). Giordano started with three scoreless innings, striking out two while DiMarsico earned the win by going the final four innings and striking out five.
After a rout in game one, the Bears won a close one in comeback fashion in game two. After an
Ayden Gurevich (Lake Worth Beach, FL) RBI single in the first, Emerson fought back to score four in the bottom of the frame and take the lead. CGA chipped away right away however in the second when
Drew Basque (Kealakekua, HI) led off with a triple and later scored on a
Kael Godshalk groundout. After a scoreless second by Bears starter
Raymond Priddy (Chico, CA), Coast Guard took the lead in the third.
Carson Cho got it all started with a leadoff single. He would score on a
Yadisson Karbalaieasghar single before Basque stayed hot with an RBI single to score
Tyler Michalek (Fort Worth, TX) who walked prior to Karbalaieasghar's single. The Bears would then take command of the lead with back to back RBI singles by
Kael Godshalk and
Luke Percifield (Pinellas Park, FL).
After taking the lead, the Bears bullpen took over and was dominant, not allowing a hit. Freshman
Alexander Smith (Fairfield, OH) took over in the fifth and earned the win with 3.1 IP, striking out two. With one out and a runner on in the 8th, Bears closer
Jackson Dorsey (Newark, DE) took over the game and showed why he is one of the best relievers in the nation. Dorsey closed out the game and earned his 4th save of the year, striking out four of the five batters he saw and securing the victory for Coast Guard.
The Bears will next take the field at home on Tuesday April 14th at 3:30 PM vs Springfield College.
