NEW LONDON, Conn. —
The United States Coast Guard Academy men's track & field team exited the first day of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Track & Field Championships in third place with 26 points following a five-event first day. The Bears were powered by two All-Conference runners-up, as well as a new school record sprint.
Those two All-Conference honorees were
Tytan Moore (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and
Paul Hobbs (Vacaville, Calif.). Moore competed in the long jump and posted a best leap of 6.99 meters (22' 11.25"), which was also a new third-best mark in Academy history. Hobbs ran the 10,000 meters and clocked in at 30:59.69 seconds, flirting with both the NEWMAC meet record and the Nitchman Track facility record in the process.
Hobbs' fellow senior
Glenn Patrick (Fairhope, Ala.) broke his own school record in the 100 meters with a blazing performance during prelims. Patrick won his heat in 10.65 seconds to finish as the third-fastest time in the field. He'll be joined in tomorrow's competitive championship sprint by
Garrett Lamb (La Vernia, Tex.), who swiped the eighth and final spot with a new USCGA #2 time of 10.89 seconds.
Also contributing points on the day were
Hayden Bergman (Hudson, Wisc.) and
Adrian Ililau (Koro, Palau). Bergman matched his collegiate best pole vault performance of 4.55 meters (14' 11") to reach third on the podium, while Ililau was sixth overall in long jump with a top leap of 6.47 meters (21' 2.75").
The meet will resumes tomorrow at 10:30 AM ET.
