The United States Coast Guard Academy men's track & field team was split between two meets this past weekend. The majority of the team competed at Connecticut College's two-day Silfen Invitational meet, while a select few traveled to the University of South Florida for the South Florida Invite on Friday, April 10th.
South Florida Invite; Meet Results
TAMPA, Fla. — Tytan Moore (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was Coast Guard's top performer down south, placing 12th overall in both horizontal jumps in his homecoming performance. He started the day with a new personal best long jump mark of 6.87 meters (22' 6.5"), a new USCGA #6 mark, while his best bound in the triple jump went 13.47 meters (45' 1").
Glenn Patrick (Fairhope, Ala.) ran the 200 meters in 21.98 seconds, setting a new personal best and slotting into #4 on Coast Guard's all-time list. Patrick also competed in 100 meters and posted a 10.80-second sprint for the second-fastest time of his career.
Silfen Invitational; Meet Results
NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Bears placed three athletes in the top ten of the 800 meters with freshman Sam Blake (Severna Park, Md.) leading the pack with a 3rd place finish. Out from the gun, Blake chased the lead runners and hung on to cross in 1:53.82, a collegiate best for him and a new USCGA #7 performance. Christian Gottlieb (Harpers Ferry W. Va.) and Mile Taylor (Austin, Tex.) were 5th and 6th, respectively running personal best times of 1:55.63 and 1:56.13.
Brendan Fant (East Lyme, Conn.) cruised to a 14:55.87 in the 5000 meters for 9th place. His performance captured a new #5 spot on the Bears all-time performance list. Senior teammate Paul Hobbs (Vacaville, Calif.) placed 4th in the 10k, finishing in 30:45.07 to just barely make himself the second-fastest USCGA cadet-athlete in the event. The school record in 30:42.00 set by David Stalters '80 in 1980. In the Elite section of the 3000 meter steeplechase, Carlos Garcia (Bristow, Va.) placed 2nd running 9:58.24, with teammate Grant Cross (Rome, Ga.) finishing 4th at 10:10.28. Andy Kehias (Bloomington, Ill.) won the Open section of the event at 10:53.97.
In the sprints, freshman Jack Younes (Newbury Park, Calif.) was 7th in the 100 meters by posting a lifetime best of 10.99, moving his name on to USCGA's all-Time list in the #4 spot. Jay Herndon (Centerton, Ark.) was the Bears' top performer in the 200 meters with his 23.45-second mark for 26th. Younes was right behind him at 23.46 seconds for 27th, and Noah Westkott (Waterford, Conn.) was 28th at 23.51. Westkott was also Coast Guard's best runner in the 400, posting a time of 53.29 seconds for 17th.
Hayden Bergman (Magnolia, Del.) was runner-up in pole vault after clearing 4.55 meters (14' 11"), while fellow freshman Apia To'oto'o (Towson, Md.) cleared 4.00 meters (13' 1.5") to place 7th. In throwing, Vincent Grillo (Wilmington, Del.) was just outside of the top eight in shot put after a 12.84-meter heave (42' 1.5") to place 9th. Christian Schlauch (Annapolis, Md.) placed 9th in discus with a best attempt of 37.61 meters (123' 5") after a 15th place effort in shot put at 11.61 meters (38' 1.25"). Adrian Illilau (Koror, Palau) was 13th in long jump after a 5.98-meter leap (19' 7.5").
Coast Guard men's track & field is set for double duty once again this upcoming weekend. The distance squad will take on the Sean Collier Invite Distance Night at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday, April 17th. The rest of the team will head to Hartford, Connecticut, on Saturday the 18th for Trinity College's home meet.
