BOSTON, Mass. —
Junior sprinter
Ian Naff (Arlington, Va.) broke his own Academy 200 meters record on Sunday, March 1st, at the New England Division III (NED3) Indoor Championships. The Bears placed within the top-8 in five events for All-NED3 honors while finishing in 12th at the annual regional meet.
Naff earned points in both of his individual sprints, with his record-setting 200 time of 21.60 seconds slotting him into 4th and his earlier 48.80 seconds in the 400 meters being good for sixth place. The junior also anchored the Bears' 4 x 400-meter relay team featuring
Garrett Lamb (La Vernia, Tex.),
Sam Blake (Severna Park, Md.) and
Miles Taylor (Austin, Tex.), which posted a final time of 3:31.27.
Another highlight for the Bears on the track came from a second-place finish in the 4 x 800 meters by the team of
Brendan Fant (East Lyme, Conn.),
Sam Myers (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.),
Dylan Reed (Caledonia, Miss.), and
Christian Gottlieb (Harpers Ferry, W.Va.), which ran 7:41.42 for a new CGA #2 time. Coast Guard's distance medley relay of Gottlieb,
Noah Westkott (Waterford, Conn.),
Darius Kirvelevicius (East Lyme, Conn.), and Reed finished just outside All-NED3 range with a 1-:25.44 for ninth.
Paul Hobbs (Vacaville, Calif.) went All-NED3 in the 5000 meters with a 7th-place time of 14:46.43, a new CGA #2, and later ran 8:39.90 in the 3000 meters. Fant was 13th in the mile at 4:14.82, while Taylor ran 1:58.90 in the 800 meters.
Drew Torrell (South Kingstown, R.I.) and
Grant Kellenberger (Mohnton, Pa.) rounded out distance and mid-distance with a pair of personal records in the 600 meters, clocking respective times of 1:24.57 and 1:26.01.
Glenn Patrick (Fairhope, Ala.) and
Jay Herndon (Centerton, Ark.) both competed in 60-meter dash preliminaries, running 7.03 and 7.10 seconds each.
The field squad was led senior pole vaulter
Josh Banks (Henderson, Nev.) who took second place with a 4.90-meter (16' 0.75") clearance in just his third meet back. Fellow vaulter
Hayden Bergman (Magnoloa, Del.) was 12th at 4.45 meters (14' 7.25") in his NED3 debut.
Vincent Grillo (Wilmington, Del.) was the lone wolf in the throwing cage for the day, and he placed 10th in shot put with a best heave of 14.20 meters (46' 7.25").
Scott Bayliss (Hudson, Ohio) was tenth overall in high jump with a highest clearance of 1.95 meters (6' 4.75"). Horizontal jumper
Tytan Moore (St. Petersburg, Fla.) 12th in long jump at 6.48 meters (21' 3.25") and moved up the program leaderboard in triple jump with his 9th-place mark of 13.81 meters (45' 3.75"), a new CGA #5.
Bears men's track & field now looks ahead to final qualifier weekend for their next slate of competitions. Qualifying and entering athletes will take on the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) All-New England Championships, while those looking to try and shake up the entry sheets in Birmingham, Alabama, will take on the Tufts Final Qualifier. Both meets are scheduled for the upcoming weekend of Friday, March 6th, and Saturday the 7th.
