MEDFORD, Mass. —
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy men's track & field team put forth a host of great performances during Tufts University's Cupid Challenge meet on Saturday.
Headlining the day for the Bears men was a return to competition by senior pole vaulter Josh Banks (Henderson, Nev.). After sitting out since the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships where he earned All-American status with a fifth-place finish, Banks showed little rust by soaring over 4.71 meters (15' 5.5") to place third overall. Freshman fellow pole vaulter Hayden Bergman (Magnolia, Del.) also had a banner day, clearing a collegiate-best jump of 4.61m (15' 1.5") and landing in the tenth spot on the program's all-time list.
Scott Bayliss (Hudson, Ohio) placed sixth in the high jump, clearing a bar at 1.92m (6' 3.5"), while Tytan Moore (St. Petersburg, Fla.) placed ninth in the triple jump with a top jump of 13.35m (43' 9.75).
In throws, freshman Anthony Gasparovic (Ocean City, N.J.) continued his impressive debut in the weight throw as he placed 13th with a throw of 14.56m (47' 9.25"), good enough to provisionally qualify for the New England Division III Championships. Vincent Grillo (Wilmington, Del.) was tenth in the shot put with a throw of 13.95m (45' 9.25").
Glenn Patrick (Fairhope, Ala.) ran a personal record time of 23.19 seconds to place fifth overall, while teammate Jay Herndon (Centerton, Ark.) also posted a career-best mark of 23.30 seconds.
In the men's 1000-meter run, senior distance specialist Paul Hobbs (Vacaville, Calif.) took a crack at some middle-distance racing and ran 2:36.47 to place sixth. Carlos Garcia (Bristow, Va.) was the top finisher from Coast Guard in the 3000m race with a time of 8:57.83, a new collegiate best.
Bears men's track & field will return to action in a week's time, heading up to Western Massachusetts to compete in Springfield College's Triangle Classic.
