NEW LONDON, Conn. —
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy men's track & field team made their long-awaited return to the oval on Saturday for CGA Winter Invite #1. Multiple cadet-athletes produced top placements against competitors from Connecticut College, Farmingdale State College, Medger Evers College, Westfield State University, the University of New Haven, and the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS).
Ian Naff (Arlington, Va.) headlined the day for the Bears with a time of 49.10 in the 400 Meters, a new Gregory Field House standard. The time converts to 47.86 on a banked track, putting Naff in the top ten of all Division III so far this season and 14th last season.
Garrett Lamb (La Vernia, Tex.) opened his 2026 with a personal best of 22.94 in the indoor 200 Meters. Lamb also placed fifth in the 55 Meters, posting a time of 6.68 in the finals after running 6.67 earlier in the preliminaries. Also in the 55m was
Jay Herndon (Centerton, Ark.), who's stellar collegiate debut in the event saw him run 6.63 for second place and fourth on the Academy's all-time list.
Sam Blake (Severna Park, Md.) won his first collegiate 800 Meters with a time of 2:00.66, while
Brendan Fant (East Lyme, Conn.) was runner-up in the mile with a time of 4:18.87, also surpassing the previous facility record. Coast Guard took the top five spots in the 3000 Meters, led by a battle to the finish between
James Kuduk (Harleysville, Pa.) and
Carlos Garcia (Bristow, Va.). Kuduk came out on top in 9:12.91, with Garcia hot on his heels at 9:13.12.
Scott Baylis (Hudson, Ohio) cleared 2.00 meters (6' 6.95") to win the High Jump, break his previous personal record by over three inches, and land at eighth on the Academy history book.
Tytan Moore (St. Petersburg, Fla.) had a banner day in the pit, winning the Long Jump with a personal best leap of 6.75m (22' 1.75") and placing third in Triple Jump with a top mark of 13.49m (44' 3.25").
Hayden Bergman (Magnolia, Del.) was the runner-up in Pole Vault, clearing a collegiate best jump of 4.30m (14' 1.25").
The Bears' top thrower on the day was
Vincent Grillo (Wilmington, Del.), who placed fourth in Shot Put with a toss of 13.60m (44' 7.5").
Anthony Gasparovic (Ocean City, N.J.) was sixth in Weight Throw after improving by over five feet from his collegiate debut in December.
