Sailing Competes in Six Regattas Around the Northeast

NEW LONDON, Conn. —

This past weekend, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's dinghy and offshore sailing teams were in action at six regattas throughout the region. Competing in both inshore and offshore events, the Bears delivered solid performances, highlighted by a fourth place finish at the Shields Trophy in Annapolis and a fifth place divisional finish at the Hatch Brown Trophy in Cambridge.

Annapolis, Md. — CGA Takes Fourth at Shields Trophy Regatta

Racing aboard Navy 44s at the U.S. Naval Academy, the Bears sailed to a strong fourth place overall finish at the prestigious Shields Trophy Regatta. Saturday featured four races in light air (7–9 knots) near Tolly and Thomas Points on the Chesapeake Bay. Racing was abandoned on Sunday due to calm conditions.

Crew: Connor Boudreau (Suffield, Conn.), Cathryn Hegner (San Antonio, Tex.), Josh Golden (Arlington, Va.), Will Spada (Huntington, N.Y.), Keith Teague (Dripping Springs, Tex.), Ben de Ondarza (West Chazy, N.Y.), Ned Jobson (Madison, Conn.), Mara Maas (Iowa City, Iowa), and Sarah Evans (Stowe, Vt.).

RESULTS

Providence, R.I. — Reeser Places 8th at Monotype Trophy

At Brown University, the Bears competed in the NEISA Open Singlehanded Championships (Monotype Trophy) in ILCA 7s. Wind delays stalled the start on Friday until 4 p.m., when a light southeasterly breeze finally filled in. Three races were completed before sunset. Ben Reeser (Wilton Manors, Fla.) led the way for CGA with an eighth place finish, while freshman Richard Pokorny (Brick Township, N.J.) placed 20th.

RESULTS

Boston, Mass. — Bears Finish 15th at Regis Trophy

Hosted by Boston University at Harvard's facilities, the Regis Trophy challenged sailors with difficult, shifting breeze. Racing was postponed until a stable sea breeze arrived around 2 p.m., allowing for five races in each division. The Bears finished 15th overall in a competitive NEISA fleet.

Division A: Ella Demand (Toms River, N.J.) and Olivia Spada (Huntington, N.Y.); Division B: Sarah Krajewski (Lewes, Del.) and Meara Conley (Hingham, Mass.)

RESULTS

New London, Conn. — Cool Breeze Finishes 5th at Offsoundings

Sailing out of Thames Yacht Club, CGA's Cool Breeze competed in the Offsoundings Regatta, placing fifth in the H-1 Whiskey Class. The event featured classic fall sailing conditions on Long Island Sound, with strong tactical challenges.

Crew: Hudson Holden (Harpswell, Maine), Eben Castleman (Ocean Springs, Miss.), John Cecil (Annapolis, Md.), Anna Buonocore (Naples, Fla.), Tony Brown (King George, Va.), Adam Alami (Dallas, Tex.), Elizabeth Hetzler (Carlton, Oreg.), Connor Lawlor (Woodstock, Ga.), and Nate Blake (Louisville, Ky.)

RESULTS

Cambridge, Mass. — Bears Post Top Five Finish at Hatch Brown Trophy

At MIT's Hatch Brown Trophy, CGA fielded three divisions in a competitive inter-conference event. The Bears finished 15th (A Division), 11th (B Division), and 5th (C Division). The C Division team posted one of the highest CGA finishes of the weekend. Three-division regattas are especially challenging, as they require significant team depth. Success depends not just on one strong pairing, but on consistently competitive performances across all three divisions.

Division A: Bradley Whiteway (Potomac, Md.) and Charlie Pohl (Euclid, Ohio); Division B: Luke Zylinski (Lavallette, N.J.) and Grace Austin (Moorpark, Calif.); Division C: Julia Conneely (Tampa, Fla.) and Gavin VanManen (Rockford, Mich.)

RESULTS

Medford, Mass. — Four CGA Teams Compete at Mystic Lake Invite

Four CGA teams raced in the Mystic Lake Invite hosted by Tufts University, placing 15th, 11th, 21st, and 16th respectively. The event gave underclass sailors key racing experience in a variety of conditions.

Bears 1: David Vinogradov (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) and Gabriella Fields (Key West, Fla.); Bears 2: Joey Richardson (San Diego, Calif.) and Julian Henderson (Camden, Maine); Bears 3: Peter Judge (Severna Park, Md.) and Morgan Batchelder (East Falmouth, Mass.); Bears 4: Maddie Murphy (Norfolk, Va.) and Austin White (Tampa, Fla.)

RESULTS

Looking ahead the Bears will compete in five major events this upcoming weekend: the NEISA Match Race Championship, Sherman Hoyt Trophy, Hood Trophy, Mrs. Hurst Bowl, and the Eagle Invite.
