Sailing earns podium finish at J70 Finals

MULTIPLE LOCATIONS —

This past weekend, the United States Coast Guard Academy sailing team competed across five events: the Boston Dinghy Cup, the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) Open Fleet Race Championship, the NEISA Women's Fleet Race Championship, the George Morris Trophy, and the J70 Spring Finals.

The Bears delivered strong performances across the board, highlighted by a third place finish at the J70 Finals and fifth place at the NEISA Women's Fleet Race Championship. Coast Guard also showed early dominance at the George Morris Trophy, leading the regatta before racing was cut short and did not meet the minimum race requirement to count. The NEISA Women's Championship and the J70 Finals were both hosted by USCGA on the Thames River.

NEW LONDON, Conn. — Following three qualifying events, the top nine teams advanced to the J70 Spring Finals. Coast Guard's Bears 1 secured a podium finish in third place, while Bears 2 placed seventh after a challenging second day. Racing conditions varied significantly over the two days as Saturday began with a north-northeast breeze that transitioned to a steady south-southwest flow for the final six races, with winds ranging from 5-12 knots. Sunday brought a north-northwest breeze that rapidly built from 10-12 knots to 20-30 knots by early afternoon, testing the competitors' boat handling and decision-making.

BEARS 1: Connor Boudreau (Suffield, Conn.), Alexis Taylor (Mason, Mich.), Hudson Holden (Harpswell, Maine), Josh Stanford (Mequon, Wisc.)
BEARS 2: Jackson Burrows (Westlake Village, Calif.), Ben de Ondarza (West Chazy, N.Y.), Anna Buonocore (Naples, Fla.), Tommy Friedman (Newton, Mass.)

NEW LONDON, Conn. — Hosted on the Thames River, the Lady Bears finished 5th out of 15 teams at the NEISA Women's Conference Championship. Racing began in light, shifty northeast conditions before transitioning to a steadier southerly breeze for the latter part of day one. Day two proved especially challenging, with a light northerly building rapidly to 30 knots, resulting in numerous capsizes across the fleet.

DIVISION A: Julia Conneely (Tampa, Fla.) and Olivia Spada (Huntington, N.Y.)
DIVISION B: Maddie Murphy (Norfolk, Va.) and Allison Nystrom (Barnstable, Mass.)
ALTERNATES: Ella Demand (Toms River, N.J.), Meara Conley (Hingham, Mass.), Caroline Odell (Burke, Va.), and Sydney Zylinski (Lavalette, N.J.)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — At the NEISA Open Fleet Race Championship, the Bears placed 12th out of 18 teams in a highly competitive fleet. Shifty northeast winds between 6-10 knots made for a tactically demanding regatta.

DIVISION A: Benjamin Reeser (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Isabella Clark (Newport Beach, Calif.)
DIVISION B: Peter Judge (Severna Park, Md.) and Julian Henderson (Camden, Maine); Richard Pokorny (Brick Township, N.J.) and Grace Austin (Moorpark, Calif.)

BOSTON, Mass. — The Bears showed strong form at the George Morris Trophy, leading the regatta in the FJ fleet before racing was ultimately cut short. Due to not meeting the required three-race minimum in each division, the event did not count toward official standings. Despite the shortened day, Coast Guard demonstrated speed and consistency across shifting conditions, with winds ranging from 5-24 knots and oscillating from southwest to northwest.

SAILORS: Joey Richardson (San Diego, Calif.), Gabriella Fields (Juneau, Alas.), David Vinogradov (Cocoa Beach, Fla.), and Austin White (Tampa, Fla.)
ALTERNATE: Will Clay (Leonardtown, Md.)

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Competing across 420s, FJs, and tech dinghies, Coast Guard finished 10th out of 17 teams after an intense 30-race Boston Dinghy Cup. Conditions featured easterly winds of 7-14 knots, overcast skies, and temperatures in the 40s.

DIVISION A: Richardson and Gabriella Fields
DIVISION B: David Vinogradov and Austin White
DIVISION C: William Clay
