Coach Spotlight — Sailing's Ali Blumenthal and Team BAAM USA Win Prestigious International Regatta

Annapolis, Md. —

Coast Guard sailing team assistant coach Ali Blumenthal claimed a major international victory this weekend, winning the 2025 Santa Maria Cup with Team BAAM USA.

The Santa Maria Cup, hosted by Eastport Yacht Club, is one of the most prestigious women's match racing events in the country and part of the Women's World Match Racing Tour. Now in its 23rd edition, the regatta drew elite female sailors from across the globe.

Blumenthal sailed alongside skipper Allie Blecher, Beka Schiff, and Rose Edwards as the quartet defeated Nicole Breault's Vela Racing team in a 3-0 sweep during a tightly contested, light-wind final on the Severn River.

"Racing against the top women in this discipline is extremely fun and challenging in a good way," said Blumenthal. "Every time I go to an event, it makes me a better sailor, and I'm then able to bring that back to the team and help our cadet-athletes grow in their own racing. It's a cycle that keeps all of us improving."

Blumenthal, a four-time U.S. Women's Match Race National Champion, has been with Team BAAM since 2017 and joined the Bears salting team's coaching staff in 2020. Since then, she has helped lead the Bears to three podium finishes in collegiate match racing.

Blumenthal's commitment to remaining active at the highest levels of competition underscores Coast Guard sailing's focus on excellence, both on the water and in coaching. Congratulations to Coach Blumenthal and Team BAAM on this outstanding achievement!
