NEW LONDON, Conn. - Coast Guard men's track & field competed in their annual outdoor home meet, the CGA Spring Invite, and placed fifth with 68 points. The Bears outranked service academy rivals Merchant Marine, who placed ninth with 27 points, to add another win to Coast Guard in the annual Superintendent's Trophy race.
UMass Dartmouth won the event with 147 points, while NEWMAC rivals Babson College took the fourth spot with 76 points. Up-river foes Connecticut College tallied 57 points for sixth place.
Underclassmen set the standard in the 5,000 meters as sophomore and local legend
Brendan Fant (East Lyme, Conn.) ran 15:35.62 to win the event; freshmen
James Kuduk (Harleysville, Pa.) and
Sam Myers (Ponte Vedra Beach, Calif.) were a respective fourth at 15:45.59 and fifth at 15.59.04. In the 1,500 meters, junior
Paul Hobbs (Vacaville, Calif.) was third running 4:05.16.
The 800 meters saw sophomore
Grant Kellenberger (Mohnton, Pa.) run 2:01.78 for sixth overall, while
Andrew Link (Winchester, Va.) was fifth in the 400-meter hurdled at 1:00.06.
In field events, freshman
Tytan Moore (St. Petersberg, Fla.) placed in the triple jump with his 13.02 meter (42' 8.75") bound and fifth in the long jump with a 6.57 meter (21' 6.75") leap. Fellow first-year
John Toohey (Towson, Md.) was runner-up in the pole vault after clearing 3.05 meters (10').
Sophomore
Vince Grillo's (Wilmington, Del.) 12.99 meter (42' 7.5") throw allowed him to take third in shot put, junior
Spencer Mackenzie (Destin, Fla.) was seventh in the discus with a top throw of 37.56 meters (123' 3"), and junior captain
Adrian Ililau (Koror, Palau) was sixth in javelin throwing 44.89 meters (147' 3").

Bears men's track stays in New London for next weekend's action, but they'll be heading next door to Connecticut College for the two-day Silfen Invitational, starting on April 11th and running through the 12th.
