Kirby earns NEWMAC gold in hammer throw at conference championships

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.  -  After day one of the 2025 NEWMAC Men's Track & Field Championships, Coast Guard finds themselves in fourth place with 27 points. Ahead of the Bears in the standings are WPI (52), MIT (39), and Babson College (30).

Liam Kuperman (Bremerton, Wash.) wound up as the Bears' top finisher in javelin after the junior placed tenth with a throw of 44.97 meters (147' 6"). Right behind him in 11th was senior Pono Renaud (Yuma, Ariz.) at 42.57 meters (139' 8"), while freshman Kevin Miner (Gainesville, Fla.) was twelfth at 36.11 meters (118' 5"). Kuperman and Miner also competed in the pole vault and tied for fifth after both maxed out at 3.65 meters (11' 11.75").

The 100-meter dash preliminaries saw freshman Garrett Lamb (La Vernia, Tex.) and junior Glenn Patrick (Fairhope, Ala.) finish the eighth- and ninth-best times, respectively, to secure advancement to tomorrow's finals. Lamb ran a 10.92 for third place in the first heat, while Patrick wound up just a fraction of a second behind at 10.93 for third in heat three. Both set lifetime best performances with their efforts.

The first member of the team to collect some hardware this postseason was senior captain Philip Kirby (North Andover, Mass.), whose best hammer throw of 47.74 meters (156' 7") secured the top spot on the podium and was a personal record. Also garnering podium placement was freshman jumper Tytan Moore (St. Petersburg, Fla.), whose best leap of 6.73 meters (22' 1") put him in third and on the program's all-time list at #10. Junior captain Adrian Ililau (Koror, Palau) was fourth at a personal best 6.59 meters (21' 7.5"). Ililau's jump was also historic for being the longest jump of any athlete from his home nation of Palau.

Rounding out the evening was the 10,000-meter run, which saw seniors Luke Manning (Waynesboro, Pa.) and Jack Davidson (West Chester, Pa.) earn respective finishes of tenth and 11th; Manning finished in 33:57.16, while captain Davidson ran 34:13.85. Also in the race was sophomore Jack Cura (Cape May, N.J.), who was 13th at 35:10.09.

The 2025 NEWMAC Men's Track & Field Championships finish tomorrow, starting at 10:30 AM.
