NEW LONDON, Conn. - Coast Guard men's track & field stayed local this weekend, competing just down the road at Connecticut College's Silfen Invitational.
Paul Hobbs (Vacaville, Calif.) won the Elite section of the 10,000 meters by running a new personal record of 31:10.09 in the event. His performance is the third fastest 10k performance in Bears history. Freshman Sam Myers (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) posted a 1:59.57 in the 800 meters, his fastest time of the spring season. Teammates Brendan Fant (East Lyme, Conn.) and James Kuduk (Harleysville, Pa.) were tenth and 11th in the Elite 1500 meters after running 4:04.17 and 4:04.23, respectively.
The men's 4x100 relay of Glenn Patrick (Fairhope, Ala.), Tytan Moore (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Garrett Lamb (La Vernia, Tex.), and Ian Naff (Arlington, Va.) made their spring season debut by winning the event with a time of 43.49. Patrick and Lamb returned later in the day to perform in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash races. Patrick was the runner-up in the 100-meter dash running 11.06, while Lamb was right behind with a lifetime best of 11.07, which also moved him up to fifth on the Academy leaderboard. Lamb also finished fourth in the 200 meters with another PR of 22.38, good for the #10 spot on the all-time list. The men's 4x400 relay of Miles Taylor (Austin, Tex.), Fant, Myers, and Naff placed second, running 3:32.16.
In the jumping events, Scott Bayliss (Hudson, Ohio) led the way with his runner-up high jump placement, clearing the bar at 1.80 meters (5' 10.75"). Moore and Adiran Ililau (Koror, Palau) were sixth and fifth in the long jump with performances of 6.16 meters (20' 2.5") and 6.06 meters (19' 10.75"), respectively. In the pole vault, Coast Guard had sixth and seventh place finishes from freshmen Kevin Miner (Gainesville, Fla.) and Liam Kuperman (Bremerton, Wash.) both clearing 3.80 meters (12' 5.5"). Moore was also sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 12.02 meters (39' 5.25").
In the throwing events, Spencer Mackenzie (Destin, Fla.) placed sixth in the discus with a best mark of 39.96 meters (131' 1"); Philip Kirby (North Andover, Mass.) was seventh in the hammer throw with a top distance of 43.05 meters (141' 3"); and Vincent Grillo (Wilmington, Del.) was third in shot put with a best mark of 13.56 meters (44' 6").
Bears men's track & field will compete at three events next weekend. On April 18th, the distance crew will compete in elite races at MIT's Sean Collier Distance Night; the next day, the whole team will between the Trinity Invitational in Hartford and UMass Lowell's George Davis Invitational.
