BOSTON, Mass. - The Coast Guard Academy men's track & field team continued to post season-best performances today, including two new school records, at Boston University's John Thomas Terrier Classic.
Sophomore Ian Naff (Arlington, Va.) continued his record-setting campaign by raising the bar in two events. First, Naff placed 11th in the 400-meters open event, running 48.31; his previous record of 48.35 was set in February 2024, also at Boston University. In his second race of the day, Naff clocked 21.93 to break his own 200-meters record of 22.02, which set just last weekend.
Sophomore Brendan Fant (East Lyme, Conn.) ran into the Academy record books by running 1:56.10 to move into the eighth spot on the 800-meter Indoor All-Time List. Freshman Sam Myers (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) also executed an outstanding race in the 800-meters, crossing the finish in 1:57.62, while fellow freshman Myles Taylor (Austin, Tex.) also went sub-2:00 in the 800 with his time of 1:59.56.
Naff, Myers, Taylor, and Fant also teamed up to run 3:24.88 in the 4x400-meters relay, which is the fastest in the event by a Coast Guard team since 2020.
More freshmen led the way for the Bears in the mile, with James Kuduk (Harleysville, Pa.) posting the top performance for Coast Guard with his 4:27.76 and Carlos Garcia (Bristow, Va.) finishing in 4:33.42. In more distance action, junior Paul Hobbs (Vacaville, Calif.) ran 14:59.74 in the 5000-meters to claim the Academy's third-fastest time in history, as well as a new personal record and the fastest 5,000-meters in 10 years.
In the field events, freshman Tytan Moore (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was the top finisher for the Bears, placing tenth in the triple jump and posting a college-best mark of 13.21 meters (43' 4.25"). Moore's jump also moves him up to eighth on Coast Guard's Indoor All-Time List. Meanwhile, fellow freshman jumper Scott Bayliss (Hudson, Ohio) cleared the high jump bar at 1.86 meters (6' 1.25") to finish 15th overall.
In the throwing events, Vincent Grillo (Wilmington, Del.) was Coast Guard's top finisher in the shot put, throwing 12.74 meters (41' 9.75") to place 16th. In the weight throw, Philip Kirby (North Andover, Mass.) was 21st with his top mark of 14.34 meters (47' 0.75").
The Bears will be back in action next week on Friday, February 7th, for their second home meet of the season.
