BOSTON, Mass. —
It was a solid start to indoor season on Saturday for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy men's track & field team at Boston University's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. The day was highlighted by local legend Brendan Fant's (Old Lyme, Conn.) record-breaking 3000m run.
Fant's time of 8:29.28 in the distance narrowly surpasses Ian Bartonicek '03, who ran 8:29.31 in 2003. The Fant household is no stranger to Academy record holders, with Brendan's father Joshua Fant '98 setting the current indoor high jump record of 2.13 meters (7' 0") in 1997.
In the sprints, Sam Blake (Severna Park, Md.) posted a 50.33 in his collegiate debut in the 400 meters. Later in the day, he ran to a 23.15 in the 200 meters, while teammate Jack Younes (Newbury Park, Calif.) ran a 23.38.
Christian Gottlieb (Harpers Ferry, W.Va.) ran a collegiate personal record time in the 800 meters of 1:57.77, while Paul Hobbs (Vacaville, Calif.) also ran a collegiate best time in the 3000 meters, crossing the finish in 8:38.89 and surpassing his previous mark by almost ten seconds.
Tytan Moore (St. Petersburg, Fla.) won the triple jump with an indoor collegiate best performance of 13.44m (44' 1.25") moving him up one spot to seventh on the CGA all-time list. In his second event of the day, Moore lept 6.41m (21' .5") in the long jump for third place.
Hayden Bergman (Magnolia, Del.) debuted at third place in pole vault, clearing a 3.95m (12'11.5") bar. The trio of Vincent Grillo (Wilmington, Del.), Christian Schlauch (Annapolis, Md.), and Anthony Gasparovic (Ocean City, N.J.) took first-through-third in the shot put, with Grillo throwing 13.42m (44' .5"). Gasparovic and Schlauch also rounded out the top three in the hammer throw, which was won by teammate Liam Kuperman (Bremerton, Wash.) at 12.69m (41' 7.75").
Bears men's track & field will return on January 17th to host the first of their two annual winter invitational meets.
