Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. - Baseball hosted Babson in a double-elimination NEWMAC Postseason game, falling to the Beavers in a close one, 12-10.
Top of the first, Babson struck with one run. The defense of the Bears held them to one, and forced the Beavers to leave two runners on.
Into the home half, with a runner on,
Parker Madden launched a homer over the right field fence to give CGA the 2-1 lead.
The Bears shut down the Beavers in the top of the second. They got two straight outs and despite the Beavers getting a hit, the runner was caught stealing second for the third out.
Coast Guard added on three runs in the bottom of the second, starting with a sacrifice fly by
Luke Percifield.
Kael Godshalk then came home off an error by Babson's catcher. Two batters later,
Carson Cho hit an RBI single to put the Bears up, 5-1.
Top of the fourth, Babson broke it open as they got eight runs to retake the lead, 9-5. The Beavers added another in the top of the fifth, making the score 10-5.
Home half of the fifth, bases loaded, a wild pitch allowed Madden to slide home and cut the Beavers' lead to four. It was then followed by a sac fly by
John Carroll to make the score 10-7.
Kael Godshalk brought the Bears within two with an RBI double. The bases were loaded once again as Percifield singled and Duthu walked. Cho then also was awarded a walk, cutting Babson's lead to just one heading into the sixth.
Babson got two back in the sixth, going up, 12-9.
Into the bottom, Coast Guard was able to plate one as Carroll doubled to bring in Madden, making it 12-10 heading into seventh.
Both teams were scoreless in the seventh, taking us into the eighth inning. Coast Guard shut down Babson in order in the top of the eighth inning, heading into the bottom still at 12-10.
The Bears loaded the bases with two consecutive singles by
Richard Barkley and
John Tacchini, followed by a walk awarded to Carroll. Despite the opportunity, CGA left the runners stranded.
Coast Guard kept Babson from adding on in the top of the final inning, taking the game into the home half for CGA's last chance. The Bears went down in order to end the game, 12-10.
Madden went three-for-five at the plate with two RBIs and Carroll was one-for-two, also with two RBIs.
Coast Guard will take on the loser of Salve Regina and Wheaton on Saturday at 9 AM.
