Bears historic season ends on Salve walk off

Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. - In a gutsy effort, the Bears were eliminated in walkoff fashion to the #1 seeded Salve Regina Seahawks in the NEWMAC. Coast Guard's final record stands at 24-11, with 24 wins being tied for the most in program history.

After Salve took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st, the Bears stormed back to tie it up in the top of the 2nd. After a Richard Barkley eight pitch walk and John Tacchini infield single, Kael Godshalk hit an RBI single into left field to score Barkley and tie the game. Salve put up two more runs in the 3rd to take a 3-1 lead.

The 3-1 score would hold until the 6th when Junior catcher Parker Madden unloaded a baseball into the left field bullpen with Nathan Stafford on base to tie the game at 3-3. That score would remain until the bottom of the 9th when the Seahawks walked off to win 4-3.

On the mound for the Bears was Harrison Milbert. The sophomore from Kingston, MA allowed just three runs in his 7.1 IP and did not allow a single extra base hit. He finishes his sophomore season at 6-0. tied with the best single season winning percentage in program history. His six wins however, are the most by any CGA pitcher who had no losses. In the 8th, Ryan Karman relieved Milbert and escaped a man on 2nd base with 1 out jam by striking out Salve Regina's 3 & 4 hitters.

Junior 2nd baseman Wyatt Duthu had the play of the game on defense. In a tie game in the bottom of the 7th, Duthu ranged into foul territory and snagged a pop up before flipping over the tarp while managing to hold on.

At the plate, CGA was led by Kael Godshalk with three hits. Godshalk went 5-8 with two RBI in the teams two tournament games. Parker Madden hit his 2nd home run of the tournament and went 2-4 at the plate. He also threw out a runner at 2nd base to end the 7th inning. Carson Cho added two hits to cap off stellar freshman season.

Coast Guard will graduate three seniors, each of whom showed tremendous dedication and had a vital role on the team. The three seniors are John Carroll, Charles Red, and John Tacchini.
