KINGS POINT, NY - The Coast Guard Wrestling team made their second trip to New York in less than a week and continued their dominant ways. In their annual Academy rivalry dual against the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Coast Guard won eight of the ten bouts, cruising to their twelfth dual meet win of the season.Â
Starting off for the Bears, Nikko Beato used a variety of takedowns and top work to smother USMMA's Colin Dragon, winning by a major decision. Despite weighing in a wrestler at 133lbs, USMMA decided to forfeit to Coast Guard's ninth-ranked Chase Randall, giving the Bears a 10-0 lead early. Owen Woolcott added to the lead with a 5-1 decision at 141lbs.Â
The bout of the evening came at 149lbs when returning NCAA Qualifier and seventh-ranked Nate Fitt used an onslaught of takedowns to win by technical fall 22-4 in less than five minutes. #12 Noah Caskey tallied a major decision at 157lbs, followed up by two technical falls from senior co-captains Steven Rochard and Joe Chapman.Â
After USMMA got on the board at 184lbs, Coy Spooner responded with an 18-3 technical fall of his own to put the dual away for good.Â
The win marks the fifth consecutive win over the Mariners and the ninth win in the last decade. Coast Guard's win tonight also marks the end of the regular season for the Bears, who finished 12-2. Next up will be the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute on March 2nd and March 3rd.Â
