COLLEGEVILLE, PA - Behind the impressive return of senior captain
Coy Spooner, Coast Guard went 3-0 at the Manganaro Duals.
In their first action off the holiday break, Coast Guard started their day by taking on #12 Alvernia University in the first round of the dual meet event.
It was a tightly contested dual, seeing the Bears win four of the first five bouts and seven of ten total. Nikko Beato kicked the action off with a 5-1 decision over Keito Shaw. #8 Chase Randall followed up the win with a first-period pin to jump out to a 9-0 team lead. #9 Nate Fitt won a decision at 149lbs before #12 Noah Caskey took out #11 Jason Rezac, 10-4. Chapman added on a second-period technical fall, 16-1.
The highlight match-up of the dual came at 197lbs where Coy Spooner made his season debut after beating Hodgkins Lymphoma this fall. Spooner wasted no time making his impact felt by upending the #3 nationally ranked Mauro Pellot by a final score of 5-3. #2 Carl DiGiorgio capped the dual off with a pin at heavyweight.
When the dust settled, Coast Guard won 29-12.
Second-round action saw the Bears wrestle SUNY Oneonta. Coast Guard won all ten bouts via bonus point victory for a 55-0 win over the Red Dragons.
This set up another tightly contested dual meet between the Falcons of Messiah University and Coast Guard. After splitting the first four matches of the dual, Coast Guard held a 10-8 lead. Caskey proved reliable again, using a 5-2 decision over Garrett Cornell - a match Cornell won two years ago. On the back half of the dual, Coast Guard won four of the final five bouts - scoring bonus point victories in each of their four wins. The final team score was 33-11 in favor of Coast Guard.
The Bears also went 18-1 on the day in exhibition bouts!
