Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – Andrew Dupuis allowed just two hits over seven innings and struck out five leading WPI to a 3-0 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game played at Holy Cross.
WPI improves to 13-14 overall and 3-8 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 16-10 overall and 7-4 in conference play.
Dupuis held the Bears hitless until a leadoff single by Parker Madden in the fifth. Charles Red also singled in the seventh for Coast Guard. Madden had two of the Bears three hits in the game.
WPI got all they would need in the second as Dylan Conners scored on a passed ball and Martin McCormack delivered a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
The Engineers got an insurance run in the seventh on a solo homer to left for Joe Salvon to close the scoring.
Coast Guard made things interesting in the ninth as Greg Boland walked, Madden singled and Jack Steel walked to load the bases with two out before Noah Pins got his third strikeout of the inning to get the save.
Cody Fidler (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he went six innings and allowed three earned runs.
The teams will complete the three-game series with a doubleheader at Coast Guard tomorrow at 1:00.
