Carroll's Two-Out Walk-Off Homer Earns Bears Split

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Blake Carroll's dramatic two-out, three-run walk-off homer in the bottom of ninth highlighted a five-run ninth as Coast Guard rallied from a 6-4 deficit for a 9-6 win after Clark won the opener 10-6 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader


Carroll, who entered the day leading the NEWMAC with a .423 average, was hitless in the two games before the towering blast to left to stun the Cougars.

Coast Guard improved to 16-8 overall and 7-2 in the NEWMAC while Clark is now 13-10 overall and 3-6 in conference play. The Bears won the weekend three-game series after the win on Friday.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they host Wheaton at 3:30.

GAME ONE – CLARK 10, COAST GUARD 6

Clark took advantage of two walks and two hit batters, who all scored in the top of the first as the Cougars jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Matther Kalinak had a two-run single while Trevor Ham added an RBI double.

The Cougars leading 5-2 would get five more in the sixth taking advantage of three walks and a catcher's interference. Anthony LoCastro had the big hit, a two-run single which pushed the lead to 10-2.

The Bears got three runs in the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice by Jack Steel and later before adding a pair of runs on errors to cut the deficit to 10-5.

Wyatt Duthu had an RBI single in the ninth to close the scoring.

LoCasto had two hits and drove in three runs while Ham added a pair of hits in the win.

Benjamin Spencer (4-1) got the win as he went six innings allowing four hits and three earned runs while walking four and fanning six. Michael Carterud got his second save of the season going the final three innings and allowing a run on three hits.

Duthu, Cody Fidler and Justin Stasiak each had two hits for Coast Guard.

John Thigpen (0-3) took the loss.

The Bears bullpen had a pair of outstanding performances as Sean Rojas went four 1/3 scoreless innings allowing just two hits while Aidan Anderson threw four scoreless and allowed three hits.

GAME TWO – COAST GUARD 9, CLARK 6

Coast Guard trailed 6-4 with two outs in the ninth before some late inning magic earned the Bears a split.

Steel laced a two-out double to center and Stasiak followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-5.

Nate Nam was hit by a pitch before Duthu reached on a throwing error which allowed Stasiak to score the tying run before Carroll's game winner.

Clark scored four runs in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead as CJ Johnson had the big hit, a two-run single in the inning.

Duthu had a two-run double in the home half of the fifth to make the score 5-4

The Cougars added an insurance run in the sixth when a run scored a wild pitch following a strikeout for the 6-4 lead.

Steel and Stasiak each had two hits for the Bears while Duthu (3-0) got the win in relief as he pitched the final three innings and allowed just two hits and struck out a career-high six.

Johnson and Anthony Keefe each had two hits for Clark. Johnson homered and drove in three runs in the loss.

Nate Bonini (0-1) took the loss for Clark.
