Women's Soccer Drops NEWMAC Show Down to Springfield

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- In a rain-soaked ninety-minute game on Nitchman Field, the Coast Guard Academy Women's Soccer team fell to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent, Springfield College by a final score of 2-0.

First half gameplay was nearly even between the two teams. Coast Guard matched Springfield shot for shot in the opening forty-five minutes, but struggled to put the ball on the frame. Of the seven shots fired at Pride goalkeeper, Taryn Ryan, the three on target were stopped. Likewise, Emily Scharnitzky for the Bears also notched three saves in the first half.

Coming out of the break, both teams jockeyed for the upper hand. Ultimately, it was a span of ten seconds that made all the difference in the game. Pride forward, Jen Walker, scored two goals just ten seconds apart off feeds from Viselike Rizos and Nicole Sweeney, respectively. Despite their best efforts, Coast Guard would not have the opportunity to get off another shot in this one. Anna Carleton and Alexandra Murphy each tallied multiple shot attempts and shots on goal.

Head Coach Susan Grant acknowledged her team's effort and quickly transitioned onto the upcoming contests where her team will look to rebound.

"We need to continue to work hard and focus on the small things in the game which will allow us to successful going into next week."

With the loss, Coast Guard drops to 4-4-1 on the season and 1-2-0 in the NEWMAC. Springfield improves to 5-2-1 and 3-0-0 in the conference.

The Bears will get their chance to rebound on Wednesday, October 5th 2022 when they travel to Emerson College for a 6pm EST match-up. This will open up a critical stretch of NEWMAC games for Grant's team.
