NEW HAVEN, Conn. —
The Coast Guard women's soccer team continued their three-game away stretch as they faced off against Albertus Magnus in a non-conference match-up Tuesday night.
The match-up was a close fought battle, in which Coast Guard would pick up their first loss of the season by a final score of 2-1 in favor of Albertus. The Bears are now 1-1-1 so far this season, and the Falcons remain undefeated through their first 4 games with a record of 3-0-1.
The first half started out quiet until the 13th minute, when the Falcons broke through first as Stacey Casorla scored on an assist from Natalya Pennant. Less than five minutes later, the Bears answered back to tie the game at one goal each. Mary Arengo (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored her first collegiate goal as a Bear after coming over on exchange from West Point.
Nobody could find the back of the net for the remainder of the first half, and it was not from a lack of trying. Albertus Magnus took nine shots in the first half, causing Julia Little (Pensacola, Fla.) to make five saves in the first 45 minutes alone.
At the start of the second half the defense of the Bears was tested again, and Little came up with two huge saves after a shot rebounded off of the post. The Falcons would fire off another nine shots in the second half. Little had 4 more saves, but could not stop them all as Albertus Magnus scored in the 87th minute to keep the Falcons undefeated and give the Bears their first loss.
Coast Guard will look to bounce back from the loss with their home opener against rival Merchant Marine. This contest is scheduled for Friday, September 11th, with a 7pm EST kick-off.
