Senior goalkeeper
Emma Acker (Springfield, Va.) posted her first career shutout to help the United States Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team draw with Alvernia University on Saturday. Despite a combined 24 shots for both teams, neither side was able to break out of scoreless stalemate.
Coast Guard will return from the Keystone State at 1-0-1, while Alvernia move to 0-1-1. The Golden Wolves will get another shot at their first win of the season when they host John Jay on September 4th.
Acker had a career-high seven saves during her first start of the season and was tested immediately, stopping two shots in the first five minutes. Sophomore midfielder
Ellie Millner (Woodbridge, Conn.) mustered the first shot on goal for the Bears in the 34th minute. Acker added two more saves in the 45th.
Millner added another quality try in the 48th minute, and junior midfielder
Mary Arengo (Cincinnati, Ohio) on target but denied in the 60th. Acker warded off three more tries from the Golden Wolves in the second half.
Alvernia totaled 17 shot attempts against the Coast Guard's seven, with 12 of the hosting sides tries coming in the second half. Millner led the Bears in shots with three, while junior midfielder
Bella Brittain (Woodbridge, Va.) was right behind her with two tries of her own. The Golden Wolves held a 5-3 advantage on the corners but saw a more active whistling, getting called for 11 fouls to the Bears' five.
Coast Guard women's soccer remains on the road for their next contest but remains in-state, traveling to New Haven to face the Hawks of Albertus Magnus College (2-0-1)
