NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Coast Guard returned to the Chase Hall Range Complex to take on John Jay and SUNY Maritime in a dual Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference meet on Saturday.
The Bears got off to a quick start in smallbore as sophomore Bryce Sturtz posted a personal best to lead the team. After a small hiccup in kneeling he shot an solid prone followed a near CGA record standing score of 191 for a 578. Junior Seth Strayer backed him up with a 573 while freshmen Rose Reynolds, 559, and Berit Bedord's 'triple nickel' 555, closed out the scoring quintet for a 2265, the second highest smallbore score of the year. Freshman Dane Harbison shot a personal best in the event.
Air Rifle saw Strayer open with a perfect 100 in his first string and go on the shoot a team leading 586. Sturtz and Blankenship battled back and forth, with Blankenship carding a 100, both ending with 575s. Reynolds and Bedord also had a see-saw match for the fourth scoring position, both shooting a 570, but Reynolds won the tie breaker. The team has a 2306 as Matt Kim and Matt Go both fired personal bests.
In the end Coast Guard picked up two conference wins on a season high score of 4571.
The Bears, now 7-7 on the season and undefeated in conference, travel to MIT for the Beanpot Tournament next Saturday, with a quick turnaround to face MIT and Schreiner University on Sunday at home.
