WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Coast Guard closed out the 2020-21 season as it had begun, against Army away at West Point.
While the Bears lost to the Black Knights 4667 to 4579 there were positive takeaways. Senior Seth Strayer again came tantalizing close to breaking the Academy prone record. He tied the record as a sophomore and equaled it several times before a final 199X200 in his last match. While disappointed that he did not shoot a perfect score, he will leave the academy with records galore. He is a member of all six record holding teams. Individually he is tied with fellow standing record holder junior Bryce Sturtz at 193X200 and owns the 3X20 smallbore aggregate record of 585X600, the air rifle record of 589X600, and the individual aggregate, smallbore and air rifle, record of 1172X1200.
At West Point, he was third overall in smallbore with a 578, leading teammates freshman Keith Fatula, 569, Sturtz, 567, and freshman Zachary Hegbli, 539, to a 2261. Also contributing was senior Hunter Blankenship, and sophomore Berit Bedord.
Air rifle saw Sturtz step up to the plate and make a run on Strayer's record coming up just three points short with a 586, a score which placed him fifth overall. Strayer backed him up shooting a 581 a score also matched by Fatula. Blankenship rounded out the top four with a 570 giving the team a score of 2318.
Blankenship will depart the academy after a distinguished athletic career that saw him named Athlete of the Month by the Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) and a CGASPORTS.COM Athlete of the Week. He was the 2018 MAC Smallbore Championship gold medalist and, like Strayer, a MAC All Conference selectee in both disciplines for three years and an anchor for all six of the academy record setting teams.
Junior Matt Kim and sophomore Matt Go also participated in air rifle.
With the season now in the record books the team awaits word on postseason honors from the College Rifle Coach Association.
