Coast Guard Rifle made a one-day dash to West Point to compete against its sister academies in the 2020 President's Cup. Losing to three powerhouse NCAA DI schools did little to deter the Bears from an Academy record setting performance 4599, to West Point's 4686, Air Force's 4682, and Navy's 4642. The Bears broke all three five-person team President's Cup Academy Records, Air 2903, Smallbore 2805, and Aggregate 5708.
Smallbore competition saw senior Seth Strayer lead the team with a 577, which included his record-tying score of 199 prone. Strayer is a co-holder of the prone record, having shot three other 199s in his
Coast Guard career, but the perfect score of 200 again eluded him. Close on his heels was junior Bryce Sturtz who posted a 571. Freshman Keith Fatula came out of the gate quickly, shooting a 564 in his
maiden Coast Guard appearance. Rounding out the scoring in the four-person event was senior Hunter Blankenship who posted a 549, giving the team an NCAA four-person score of 2261. Freshman Zachary Hegbli added a 544 to give the Bears a new five-person team record score of 2805 towards the President's Cup results, seven-points better than the previous mark.
Switching to air rifle did little to slow down the run on the records. Fatula came within two points of tying the school record of 589 with a 587 and gave the Bears the boost needed to establish a new four-person air rifle team record of 2338, a two-point improvement on the old score. Sturtz came through with a 585 while Strayer and Blankenship both scored 583s. Sophomore Berit Bedord's 565 rounded out
the five-person President's Cup score with a 2903, sixteen-points over the previous record.
Making the most out of what will be the only competition of the fall semester, the Bears 2261 in smallbore and a 2338 in air gave them an Academy-tying 4599 aggregate, The Bear's next match is scheduled for 30 January 2021, in Greenwich, CT against John Jay and West Point.
