NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association has announced that five Coast Guard rifle team members have been named CRCA Academic All Americans.
Since its founding in 1994 the CRCA's purpose has been to improve collegiate rifle competitions by offering a unified voice on the issues which define the sport and to offer resources to coaches and competitors as they strive for excellence on the range and classroom.
Leading the Bears is freshman Caleb Brockett, a Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering major, whose cumulative average of 3.95 also allows him to display a gold academic star on his uniform.
Team captain and Naval Architecture major senior Seth Strayer is a three time repeat honoree. Upon graduation he will be heading to Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston to work in the areas of marine safety, disaster relief, environmental protection and law enforcement within the region.
A mechanical engineering major, junior team captain Bryce Sturtz has been named for a third time.
Junior Matt Kim, an Electrical Engineering major, was named for the second time.
Making his maiden appearance as a CRCA Academic All American is Keith Fatula, a management major.
This season, 181 student-athletes were named CRCA Scholastic All-Americans which requires a student-athlete to maintain a 3.2 cumulative GPA.
Dr. Richard Hawkins, Coast Guard's Head Shooting Sports Coach, said, "These cadets can maintain a high level of academic performance in demanding STEM majors, while excelling in athletics, speaks well of their hard work and ability to focus and manage time."
