Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Garrett Drummond had 21 of his career-high 33 points in the second half as Coast Guard overcame a 15-point halftime deficit leading the Bears to an 87-84 win over host Wheaton in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Drummond, who was averaging 5.3 points per game this season, was fantastic making 14 of 18 field goals while adding six rebounds and a team-high four assists in the must win game. The Bears improve to 7-10 overall and 2-5 in the NEWMAC while Wheaton drops to 5-12 overall and 0-7 in conference play.
Packy Witkowski added 17 points while J.T. Cox (15) and Justin Kane (10) also scored in double figures for the Bears. Tyler Perez had a career-high 12 rebounds for Coast Guard.
Witkowski's bucket with 54 seconds left gave the Bears the lead 81-80. In a bizarre play, with Coast Guard leading 83-82, Wheaton was trying to foul Witkowski as two players went to foul him, but Witkowski was called for an offensive foul giving the Lyons a chance to take the lead. A 3-point shot was air balled before Cox knocked down a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to make the score 85-82.
Wheaton's Aaron Williams would decide to go for a layup with a second left and the Bears still led 85-84 before Witkowski made a pair of free throws with one second left and the Lyons turned the ball over as the Bears completed the comeback win.
Coast Guard, which trailed 50-35 at halftime, would start the second half with 10 straight points cutting the deficit to 50-45 with 16:48 left.
The Bears would take their first lead of the second half 63-61 on a layup by Drummond with 11:06 left.
Drummond's trey with 3:43 left gave Coast Guard its largest lead of the half 79-74 with 3:43 left. The Lyons would respond with six straight taking an 80-79 lead with 1:06 left.
Wheaton led 23-22 and went on a 14-2 run opening up a 37-24 lead with 3:43 left in the opening half. The Lyons shot 60 percent from the field in the first half (18-30) and led 50-35 at the break.
