Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bears fall to Mitchell in penultimate game of the year

NEW LONDON, Conn. --

Wednesday night, the Coast Guard men's basketball team traveled across New London to face off against Mitchell College at the Yarnall Athletic Center for a non-conference game. The Bears would fall to the Mariners with a final score of 97-88.

Coast Guard quickly jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the first minute and a half of the game following a couple 3-pointers. Mitchell found their way back into the game with layups and free throws giving them their first lead of the game 20-19 with 12:12 remaining in the first half. The remainder of the first half would be back and forth with neither team able to take a big lead.

The Bears closed out the first half with two layups including a three-point play. This put them up 51-45 going into the locker room at halftime.

In the first 5 minutes of the second half, it seemed to be just like the first; back and forth. The Mariners took the lead once again this time by a David Stallworth fastbreak layup 58-56 with 15:38 remaining in the contest. No matter how many times Mitchell College would score, Coast Guard would find a way to answer. That is, until the final 4 minutes of the game in which the Mariners would only allow the Bears within 8 points while getting as high as a 12 point lead.

Final score would end up 97-88 in favor of Mitchell College, despite Coast Guard having 3 players in double-digit scoring including 2 with more than 20 points.

Luke Farrell (Ortley Beach, NJ) recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Elijah Parent (Bristol, Conn.) scored a career-high in points with 23. He also racked up 5 assists and 4 rebounds.

Jordan Frazer (Columbia, SC) shot 60% from the field finishing with 19 points, 4 assists, and 5 rebounds.

With this loss the Bears fall to 7-17 and 3-12 in NEWMAC. The Mariners improve to 8-17 and 3-9 in Great Northeast.

One more game remaining in the regular season this year. Coast Guard will travel to Cambridge, MA for one last NEWMAC regular season game against MIT (6-18, 2-13 NEWMAC). These teams already faced each other this season. The first time was back on January 22, in which Coast Guard got the better of MIT, winning 87-80.
