Strong first half unable to lift Bears past WPI on the road

Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. --

Wednesday night Coast Guard men's basketball traveled to Worcester, Mass. to face off against WPI at Harrington Auditorium. What was a close game in the first half would eventually get away from the Bears in which they ended up losing to the Engineers 90-66. 

WPI currently sits at the top of the NEWMAC standings. Their overall record improves to 18-4 and 11-2 in conference play. With this loss, the Bears fall to 7-15 overall and 3-11 in NEWMAC play.  

The Bears jumped out to an 11-4 run over the Engineers in the first 5 minutes of play. WPI quickly tied the game at 11-11 with 11:30 to play in the first half. After back and fourth 3 pointers from each team, Senior forward Luke Farrell converted on an and-one with 10:40 remaining. WPI kept the offense going strong to end the first half with a 37-33 lead over the Bears going into halftime. Farrell led all players at halftime with 12 points.  

The second half would turn into an all Engineer offense in which they came out of the half on a 12-4 run of their own to extend their lead to 49-37. After 3 straight 3-pointers from each team, WPI led 71-54. The Bears could never get within reach of the Engineers with a tough shooting night from three. Coast Guard shot 7-28 from behind the arc. The Engineers went on to win 90-66 having 5 players in double digit points. Nathan Bledsoe led with 18 points, J.R. Newman finished with 16 points, Justin Molen scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, Matt Morvillo scored 14 points, and Tim Reidy finished with 12 points.  

Senior forward for the Bears, Luke Farrell (Ortley, NJ), led all players with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Junior guard, Jordan Frazer (Columbia, SC), finished with 12 points and 5 assists.  

Coast Guard will host NEWMAC opponent Salve Regina this Saturday February 14th for the Bears senior day at a 3pm tipoff at Roland Hall. Salve Regina currently sit at 16-6 and 9-4 in NEWMAC.
