NEW LONDON, Conn. – Jake Ross posted a double-double with game-highs of 30 points and 12 rebounds leading Springfield to a 94-82 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Heath Post also had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Trey Witter (14) and Daryl Costa (11) scored in double figures for the Pride, who improve to 14-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
Tyler Perez led five Coast Guard players in double figures with 17 points while Packy Witkowski (16), Justin Kane (15), Garrett Drummond (14) and Noah Baldez (11) were also in double figure for the Bears, who drop to 6-10 overall and 1-5 in the NEWMAC. The 14 points were a career-high for Drummond. Kane and Perez had seven rebounds each to lead the Bears while Baldez had a game-high five assists.
The Pride shot 53.7 percent (36-67) in the win while making nine of 22 from 3-point range while Coast Guard was 30 of 64 (46.9 percent) from the floor and hit five of 18 from behind the arc.
Springfield doubled up the Bears 14-7 in the first seven minutes of the game and pushed the lead to 29-17 with 8:29 left in the first half.
The Bears would later score seven straight to make the score 33-29 with 5:40 left on a jumper by Drummond. Springfield answered with a 12-2 spurt taking a 45-31 lead on a trey by Ross with 2:19 left. The Pride led 49-38 at halftime.
Springfield took control with a 9-0 to open up a 58-42 lead with 15:52 left.
Coast Guard would score seven straight to get the lead back to single digits at 84-76 with 3:51 left following back-to-back layups by Drummond.
Costa made five of six free throws in a span of 18 seconds to put the game away with just over a minute left.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday night at Wheaton in a NEWMAC game at 8:00.
