PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Coast Guard wrestling team finished in fourth place at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Sunday afternoon.

Host No. 4 Johnson and Wales won the meet, followed by No. 17 Roger Williams in second and No. 16 WPI in third.

After a resounding 51-0 victory over Rhode Island College for the second time this week the Bears met No. 18 Wesleyan in the quarterfinals. 

The Cardinals held a 10-6 victory through the first four matches with sophomore Owen McClave scoring Coast Guard's only points by pinning Tristan Stetson in 1:19 at 133.

The Bears then rattled off four straight victories from 157-184 for a 23-10 lead. Senior Chris Sullivan, ranked fifth in the country, got the ball rolling for Coast Guard scoring his fifth pin of the season in 2:02 over Edward Pierce.

After junior Nick Remke, ranked seventh in the country at 165, registered a tech. fall (23-8) over Aaron Cranston, sophomore A.J. Aeberli, ranked ninth in the country at 174, and freshman Jonathan Wagner each scored decisions, putting the Bears out of reach of Wesleyan at 23-10.

Even with the Cardinals scoring a fall in the each of the final two matches, it was not enough to pull off the upset and pushed Coast Guard through to the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, JWU got off to a fast start, running out to a 18-0 lead as they took down the Bears 31-6. Remke and Aeberli each earned decisions for Coast Guard's only points.

In the third place match, the Bears met WPI in a rematch from earlier this season when the Engineers took down the Bears 20-12.

Down 16-0 early on, Coast Guard climbed back into the dual scoring 15 of the next 18 points led by a tech. fall by Sullivan at 157 over Tyler Marsh.

Just down four (19-15) going into the final match, senior Cory Tomasetti battled hard against Austin Shrewbury but was unable to score a major decision or better, falling to him 3-2 and giving WPI the 22-15 win.

Coast Guard is back in action Saturday, January 27th, when they travel to the Citadel for the All-Academy Championship. Matches start at 9:00 am.
