NEW LONDON, Conn. --  Sophomore Kara Holinski  had 15 of her game-high 22 points in the second half  and grabbed a team-high six rebounds while classmate Taylor V'Dovec added 16 points as MIT overcame a slow start to beat Coast Guard 66-46 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

MIT, winners of seven of its last eight, improves to 10-2 overall and remains a perfect 4-0 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard drops to 2-9 overall and 0-3 in conference action.

The Engineers shot 33.9 percent (20-59) from the floor while making 9 of 28 from behind the arc.

Freshman Zoe Riis-Fallica had a career-high 12 points as she made 4 of 6 from 3-point range. Junior Gill Gerton finished with 12 points and seven rebounds for Coast Guard. Freshman Breanna Wood had a career-high 11 rebounds for the Bears.

Coast Guard shot 33.3 percent from the floor (17-51) including 7 of 22 from 3-point range.

The Bears jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game and led 13-2 following a 3-pointer by Riis-Fallica with 4:13 left in the first quarter.

Coast Guard led 16-4 after the first quarter as MIT was just 1 of 12 from the field and 0-6 from 3-point range while the Bears made six of 13 including 3 of 5 from behind the arc. The Bears held a 15-5 edge in rebounding in the first quarter.

The Engineers got things going quickly in the second quarter as they scored the first eight points of the quarter cutting the deficit to 16-12 on a basket by V'Dovec with 7:39 left in the first half.

MIT would start the quarter on a 16-2 run to take a 20-18 lead on a basket by V'Dovec with 2:20 left in the half. The Engineers led 27-22 at halftime outscoring Coast Guard 23-6 in the second quarter. V'Dovec had 13 of the Engineers 27 first half points.

The Bears regained the lead 33-31 on a 3-pointer by Riis-Fallica with 4:32 left in the third quarter to cap a 7-0 run.

MIT would answer with nine straight taking a 40-33 lead capped on a layup by sophomore Dolly Yuan with 2:39 left in the third. The Engineers led 48-37 after three quarters.

The Engineers would put the game away when sophomore Kristen Ngan and Holinksi knocked down consecutive 3-pointers for a 56-39 lead with eight minutes left in the game.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday at WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) at 2:00.
