Bears unable to get offense off the ground at Salve

NEWPORT, R.I. –

In a matchup between the 6th and 7th currently ranked teams in the NEWMAC standings, Salve Regina cruised to a 76-59 victory over the Bears. The Seahawks(13-10, 6-4 NEWMAC) ended a four game losing streak vs CGA and will close out their season on the road vs MIT with a chance to potentially pass the Engineers(6-3) in the standings.

Coast Guard took a 2-1 lead early in the game on a Taylor Lynch(Madison, IN) put back layup but that would be the only lead the Bears would hold in the game with Salve outscoring them in each quarter: 14-11, 24-15, 20-18, and 18-15.

The Bears were led in scoring by Dorothy Stotts(Edina, MN) who scored 16 points. Just behind Stotts was Taylor Lynch with 12 points. Stotts also paced the Coast Guard defense with two steals. On the boards, it was the Bears three seniors leading the way. Glory Blethen(Boothbay, ME) had nine, Julia Mann(Central Square, NY) had eight, and Kelly Hagerty(Emerald Isle, NC) had seven with Blethen also adding two blocks.

With the loss, CGA falls to 15-9(4-6 NEWMAC). They are currently tied at 4-6 in 7th place in the conference with WPI.

As a team, the Bears were unable to sustain consistent success on offense. They shot just 36.5%(27-74) from the field and were a season low 8.7%(2-23) from three point range. Salve Regina in turn was 43.3% from the field and 53.8% from three.

Coast Guard will close out their regular season campaign on Saturday February 22nd vs Mount Holyoke at 1:00 PM for a chance to clinch a berth in the NEWMAC playoffs. Prior to Saturday's game, the Bears will honor their three seniors: Glory Blethen, Kelly Hagerty, and Julia Mann.
