Bears Win Two of Three at Washington and Lee Duals

LEXINGTON, Va. – Coast Guard, ranked 24th nationally, won two of three matches at the Washington and Lee Duals.

The Bears began the day by knocking off 14th ranked Cortland 18-16 as freshman Patrick Irwin earned a 3-2 decision in triple overtime in the final match to give Coast Guard the win.

Freshman Owen McClave earned a 4-3 decision at 133, senior Matt McAllister won an 8-6 decision and 141 while senior Matt Vieira won 4-3 at 149.

Junior Chris Sullivan, ranked 6th nationally, won a 3-2 decision to give the Bears a 12-4 lead.

Three straight wins gave Cortland a 16-12 lead with two matches left.

Senior Phil Azzari's 3-1 decision at 197 cut the deficit to 16-15 setting up the heavyweight match which would decide it as Irwin gave the Bears the win.

In the second match of the day, the Bears lost to Lycoming 21-19 as the match again came down to the heavyweight bout, but this time Irwin was pinned in 1:52.

Senior Earl Roberts pinned his opponent in 6:43 at 125 pounds before McClave earned a 18-4 major decision at 133 pounds.

McAllister would earn a 5-4 decision at 141 pounds giving the Bears a 13-0 lead before Vieira was pinned by Seth Lansberry, who is ranked first nationally, at 149 pounds.

Sullivan earned an 8-3 decision at 157 pounds before Nolan Barger, who is 7th nationally at 165, earned a 7-1 decision over Nick Remke.

Senior Mike Palomba dropped a 7-3 decision at 174 before classmate Dan Fiorvanti registered a 5-2 decision at 184 pounds to give the Bears a 19-12 lead.

Azzari lost a 5-2 decision at 197 before Irwin was pinned.

In the final match of the day, Coast Guard beat Greensboro 28-16.

Roberts won a 13-7 decision at 125, McAllister recorded a 12-4 major decision at 141. Sullivan pinned his opponent in 1:53 at 157 pounds before Remke won by fall in 2:22 giving the Bears a 19-9 lead.

Palomba won 3-2 at 174 and junior Cory Tomasetti won by fall in 2:24 at heavyweight to clinch the victory for the Bears.

Coast Guard is now 3-1 in dual matches this season and the Bears are back in action on January 12th when they travel to Roger Williams for a dual match at 7 p.m.
