Auzenberg's Goal Paces Bears Past Lions

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Junior Gabrielle Auzenbergs's goal in the 55th minute guided the Bears past the Emerson women's soccer team 1-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

Coast Guard moves to 6-6-4 overall and 2-4-2 in NEWMAC play. Emerson drops to 9-8 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

Sophomore goalkeeper (6-6-4) Rachel Boohar made three saves in the win for her first shutout of the year and the fourth of her career putting her in a four way tie for fourth all time in program history (Devin Fellman '10-'13, Trish Ohle '06-'08, and Tori Lusardi '04-'06).

Senior goalkeeper Melanie Escobar (7-8) was tagged with the loss for Emerson making three stops in 90 minutes between the pipes.

Sophomore Paige Haley led the Lions with six shots, while seniors Katie Clark and Brianna Grisell paced Coast Guard with two shots apiece.

Neither team could find the back of the net as the first half closed with the two teams having three shots each but still tied at zero.

It was not until the 55th minute that the Bears made their way onto the board. Auzenbergs tallied the game's first and only goal just ten minutes into the second half as she settled the ball on the right side of the Lion's penalty box and sent a shot at Escobar that slipped through her legs for Auzenbergs second goal of the season.

After Coast Guard upped the score to 1-0, Emerson sent four shots towards Boohar, but the ball never found the back of the net.

Freshman Elizabeth Miller made a game saving tackle in the closing seconds of the game as sophomore Jess Frost attempted to sneak past Miller and fire a shot on goal. Miller lunged in blocking her shot and knocking the ball away preserving the 1-0 victory for the Bears.

Before today's game the women's soccer team honored their six seniors: Katie Clark, Brianna Grisell, Emily Matthews, Moira Meek, Terry Netusil and Alyssa Sato.

This senior class has started a combined 268 games and accounted for 27 goals during their four years at the Academy.

The Bears play their final home game of the year as they host Wellesley at 7:00 p.m on Tuesday, October 25.
