Bears Drop Season Finale at Dodd

NORWICH, Conn. – Mitchell exploded for all six runs in the fifth inning en route to a 6-3 win over Coast Guard at Dodd Stadium in the final game of the season for the Bears.

Coast Guard finishes the season 16-16 while Mitchell improves to 26-3 on the year.

The Bears struck first in the first inning as senior Matt Hanks singled and later came around on an RBI single by sophomore Tim Duncan.

Coast Guard sophomore Colton Cannon allowed just three hits over the first four innings keeping the Mariners off the scoreboard before giving way to the Bears bullpen.

In the fifth, Mitchell sent ten men to the plate. Senior Kenneth Olsewski's two-run single gave Mitchell a 2-1 lead. Senior Ryan Goodwin added an RBI single before junior Neftali Arroyo drew a bases loaded walk to make it 4-1.  Senior Drew Doyle's RBI single plated the fifth run and the sixth run scored while Coast Guard was throwing out the trail runner on the bases to make it 6-1.

In the sixth, junior Kyle Wood walked, sophomore Brendan McNeil and junior Mark Behne singled to load the bases with one out. Freshman Alex Murdoch's fielder's choice plated a run.

Coast Guard added its final run in the eighth as Duncan singled and scored on an RBI single by Murdoch.

Freshman Eddie Santiago (3-0) picked up the win in relief as he worked five innings and allowed five hits and a pair of earned runs while walking one and striking out three. Junior Domenick Giaramida pitched a hitless ninth with a pair of strikeouts to register his second save of the season.

Freshman Bryton Ferris started for Mitchell and went three innings allowing five hits and an earned run with one strikeout.

Senior Dylan Wright (0-1) took the loss for the Bears in relief as he allowed six runs, four earned.

Senior Andrew Lucak allowed five hits and no runs in 3 2/3 innings of relief while sophomore Eric Vrissis pitched a scoreless ninth for Coast Guard.

Senior Evan Peck, Goodwin and senior Peter McTernan each had two hits in the win for Mitchell.

Senior Blake Thompson and Hanks along with Behne each had two hits for Coast Guard.

It was the final game for six Coast Guard seniors Dan Sabourin, Lou Simione, Thompson, Hanks, Wright and Lucak. The senior class won 67 games in their four years and the team won a school-record 24 games during their sophomore year.
