Bears Walk Off To Sweep Rival Merchant Marine

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FORT MYERS, Fla. –  Junior Kyle Wood's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave the Bears a 1-0 walk off win to complete the sweep of archrival Merchant Marine after the Bears came-from-behind to win the opener 9-8 at the Gene Cusic Classic.

Sophomore Tim Duncan led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple in the left field corner before Wood's single sent improved the Bears to 3-0 on the season.

The second game was a pitchers' duel as each team had just one hit heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Colton Cannon was brilliant allowing just one hit over six innings while walking one and fanning six before senior Blake Thompson worked a perfect top of the seventh and picked up the win and the combined one-hitter.

Thompson had the only other Coast Guard hit in the nightcap, a double in the third.

The opener saw Coast Guard jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Bears scored four times in the second on five hits including RBI singles by sophomore Mike Jeffko, Thompson and junior Mark Behne before the Bears added an unearned run in the third.

Merchant Marine (0-2) scored once in the third and then erupted for seven runs on eight hits in the fourth to take an 8-5 lead.

Coast Guard battled back scoring four times in the fifth. Sophomore Brendan McNeil's two-run single cut the deficit to 8-7 before yesterday's hero freshman Alex Murdoch's RBI single tied the game 8-8. Murdoch would steal second and come around on an booted ground ball and scored the eventual winning run.

Sophomore Justin Rebholz picked up the win in relief as he worked 3 1/3 innings scattering six hits and allowing just one run and striking out a batter. Freshman Cody Bain came on in and struck out the only batter he faced to record his second save in as many days.

Thompson and McNeil each had two hits in the game two win for the Bears.

Coast Guard which lost nine one-run games last season, has now begun the season with a trio of one-run wins as the Bears are off to a 3-0 start for the first time under head coach C.C. Grant.

The Bears are 3-0 for the first time  since 2006 when Coast Guard swept Merchant Marine three straight games to begin the season.

Coast Guard will conclude the three-game series with Merchant Marine on Monday morning at 9 a.m.
