Bears Drop Pair of One Run Games at MIT

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Parker Tew's two-out RBI single gave MIT a 6-5 win in 12 innings as the Engineers completed a sweep of Coast Guard after winning the opener of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader 3-2.

MIT improves to 6-4 while winning their first two conference games while the Bears drop to 4-8 and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.

In the second game, Coast Guard trailing 5-3, rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings.

Junior Blake Thompson's RBI double scored sophomore Cory Sonnega, who walked, to pull the Bears to within 5-4. Junior Dan Sabourin's RBI groundout scored Thompson to tie the game 5-5.

The Bears struck first in the first on an RBI single by sophomore Kyle Wood scoring Sabourin, who was hit by a pitch.

MIT scored three times in the first, doing all the damage after the first two batters were retired.

The Engineers added a single run in the second for a 4-1 lead.

Coast Guard got a pair of runs in the top of the sixth as they took advantage of pair of MIT errors and an RBI single by sophomore Mark Behne while Wood added an RBI on a fielder's choice to make  the score 4-3.

The Bears had a chance to tie or take the lead in the seventh as they had runners on second and third with no outs, but a pair of strike outs and a ground out ended the threat.

The Engineers added an insurance run in the seventh for the 5-3 lead before the Bears tied it in the ninth.

Coast Guard had a great chance to take the lead in the tenth, but again they left runners on second and third.

MIT won the game as John Drago singled, stole second and scored on Tew's single.

Junior Andrew Lucak pitched well going the first seven innings for the Bears as he scattered eight hits while allowing five runs, four earned. He walked one and struck out four.

Freshman Eric Vrissis (1-1) was outstanding in relief allowing just the one run in 4 2/3 innings work. He allowed three hits, walked one and fanned two, but he was the tough luck loser.

Junior Matt Hanks had a pair of hits for the Bears in the game two loss.

In the opener, MIT scored once in the first, second and fourth innings for a 3-0 lead before Coast Guard scored twice in the sixth as sophomore Ed Lazowski led off with a single before back-to-back RBI doubles by Sabourin and Thompson pulled the Bears to within 3-2.

Freshman Luke Sniatkowski (1-1) pitched well in the opener for Coast Guard as he went six innings and allowed three runs, just one earned, while walking three and striking out three, but took the loss.

Freshman Justin Rebholz threw a pair of scoreless innings in relief allowing just one hit, walking two and striking out three to keep the Bears in the game.

"We got outstanding performances from all four of the guys who pitched today," said Coast Guard head coach C.C. Grant. "We did however make too many mental and physical errors both at the plate and in the field to win a game against a quality team like MIT."

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Babson for NEWMAC game at 3:30 p.m.
